Oh Marc

Marc Jacobs Fall 2011, NYFW

There’s something ever so sadomasochistic about Marc Jacobs new collection, with Marilyn Manson’s ‘The Beautiful People’ as the soundtrack and the models taking fast pigeon steps around the runway due to the restrictions of the pencil skirts, plus the heavy use of rubber and pill box hats kept on with thick plastic chin straps.

Polka dots were everywhere, polka dot skirts, polka dot dresses, and polka dot tights to name a few polka dotted garments, their size ranging from large Dalmatian like dots right through to tiny polka dots. Circles in general had a real presence in the collection, skirts made up of small rubber circles that caught the light as if they were sequins and larger disks stuck next to one another to form pencil skirts with tiny little peep holes giving the collection a space-like feel. Sliver rubbery trousers teamed with a plain polo neck top started the show, both garments moving beautifully with the models body. Makeup was simple, with enhanced cheek bones and hair was pulled back into sleek ponytails with most models wearing hats attached to the head with a plastic chin strap.

Everything was excellently tailored and carefully thought out with pieces being quite reminiscent of past collections by Marc Jacobs.
